Research on Masturbation

I have three questions to answer:

Typical age of masturbation onset (by gender).
Typical age of orgasm/ejaculatory onset (by gender).
Typical age of highest masturbation frequency (by gender).

So what’s up with the relative lack of research on this topic? (Yes, that was a rhetorical question, for you smart-alecks in the peanut gallery.) Here’s what I’ve [...]

How to hide an unwanted erection

This is a straightforward list of effective suggestions for those teenage boys who are dealing with extensive testosterone surges and who are in need of some assistance in making themselves socially appropriate for the duration.
Go on now, pass on the video or the information to those most in need!

The secret to reaching teens about sex (or anything else)

Sex ed by text message. Of course it happened first in San Francisco, where they’re serious about getting sex education messages out, in any medium possible.
The moral of this story is: Want to talk to your teenager? Do it in the medium she or he uses most. For many teenagers that’s [...]

Calming down college application crazyness

“But,” you complain upon reading the title, “it’s not even application season yet! Doesn’t that start in the fall?”
“Nevertheless,” I respond with a sigh, “next year’s seniors are already obsessing about them.”
It seems that these baby boomer’s children, who are so many in number and so high-performing, have crammed all they can into the [...]

Beyond the Birds and Bees: a class for parents

I am offering a summer session of my sex-ed class for parents, the information is below. Parents who have taken this class in the past have said that it has dramatically increased their ability to talk about sex and sexuality with their kids - and that has in turn supported a strong and conscious [...]

On trust

I am working with a production company from France to create a documentary about human development from birth through the beginnings of puberty and sexual interest. My conversation, of course, will come primarily at the end of the film. In addition to an interview piece, they asked that I gather a group of [...]

Today’s my birthday!

So I’m taking the day off. However, please feel free to fill my comment box with well wishes.
So in place of a more in-depth post this morning, please download and read my recent interview with Karen Kreps in this month’s Good Life Magazine about teenagers learning about sex on-line.
See you tomorrow, [...]

Guttmacher Instutite Research on Adolescent Sexuality Trends Analyzed by Me!

Yesterday’s big news was the new Guttmacher Institute study that suggests teenagers are not using oral sex as a way to stay “technically still a virgin.” Rather, it says that teenagers who are engaging in oral sex are by-and-large also engaging in vaginal intercourse.
I must admit - I am rather surprised by this finding.  [...]

Sex and the family

I am on the board for a soon-to-be non-profit called Blossom Family Center. Blossom currently has a number of programs, including a parent-child class for very young children, a delightful and informative series of workshops, and is working to start up a care-taker training program. All of this is set within the context [...]

Interview with Tina Hester from Jane’s Due Process

Karen: Hi Tina, and thank you for meeting to talk with me about your work. First, can you tell me a bit about Jane’s Due Process Legal Hot-line?
Tina: Jane’s Due Process was formed after the state legislature passed a parental consent law for minors to obtain abortions. So Jane’s Due Process provides [...]
