We (most adults, certainly most parents of teens) have so much trouble believing teens can make responsible, healthy sexual decisions and engage in responsible, healthy sexual behavior. Why is this? How do we decide when it is okay for our kids to become fully sexual beings? I don't know - what do you think?

I don't have any trouble believing teens can make healthy, responsible decisions with regard to their sexual behavior. I generally believe most teens haven't been taught to behave in such a fashion. And those are the teens that scare me. I believe that if you start early and often you can have a teen that will make responsible and healthy choices.

I have issue with your sentence about when we (I'm assuming you are referring to parents) decide when its okay for our teens to become sexual beings. I, as a parent, don't actually decide when my teen becomes sexual. As a parent, I believe I should provide the right tools to my teen for her to handle a sexual relationship when she is ready. I don't think another person can ever be in charge of someone's sexuality and I personally wouldn't want to be. I think this is part of the general discomfort most parents feel. You get so used to directing every aspect of a child's life that we attempt to control this as well.

I'm one who is horrified by the idea of high schoolers having sex, because they ought to be concentrating on their studies, extracurricular activities, volunteering, afterschool jobs, platonic friendships and non-sexual romantic relationships, etc. They shouldn't have to worry about STD's or pregnancy for a long, long time.
