This blog is an on-going conversation about adolescent sexuality, and all of the nuances and social issues inherent to the topic. I believe…that parents have to talk to their kids about sex…that everyone has sex, and should therefore know about sex…that sex is not all bad, even for teenagers. Read more on what I believe in my This I Believe page.
You make me laugh, Alice! No, I think the point is that sex with this brand of condom is quite pleasurable. And the kid is using his parents’ pleasure to his advantage by asking permission to do outrageous things at opportune moments.
I think Alice’s point was that she didn’t find the idea of putting the cat in the washing machine funny. I agree - I’m uncomfortable with this one and many of the images (including the idea of promoting in the US the idea that the French are so focused on sexual pleasure that they don’t parent adequately).
Although, for a fact, I don’t find the idea of putting a cat in the washing machine funny, I was mostly just confused. I didn’t get that the parents were busy having sex while the kid was going wild. I didn’t get the point of the commercial at all. Must be my own cultural ignorance.
I don’t think most Americans spend much time thinking about French parenting.
I think don’t really think this should be seen as a statement on animal cruelty or French parenting. It’s just a condom ad, and one I found very funny.

Sex with a condom is as pleasurable as washing a cat? I don’t get it.

Hmm, that’s a good point, Dorian. I hadn’t thought of those perspectives.
